Private John James Little

John James Little was born on 20 October 1889 at 1 St Mary's Terrace, Irishtown, Dublin, one of eight children of Scottish-born bottle-maker John James Little and his wife Mary Ellen (née Cannon). At the time of the 1911 Census he was living at 1 Spencer Terrace, Pembroke West, Dublin, with his parents and his two surviving siblings, and working as a bottle-maker.

Little enlisted at Dublin on 3 May 1916, probably in a regiment other than the North Irish Horse. He was described as being 5' 5" tall, with a fresh complexion, dark hair and brown eyes, and a mole or wart on the left side of his nose.

Between 2 and 3 July 1917 he joined the North Irish Horse (regimental number 2598).

He trained at the regiment's reserve base at Antrim, but was reported to have deserted on 18 September and 17 November 1917. Whether he subsequently returned to duty is not known at present.
